\u201cWE HAD THIS GREAT YARN that we used to weave our fabric,\u201d explains Sutherland and Perennials COO Chris Morris. But what else could they do with this spectacularly soil-resistant fiber? The answer would change the lives of hundreds around the village of Manjusar\u2014about three-quarters of the way up India\u2019s western coast. Today, it\u2019s the home of Perennials India. But it started with the simple desire to make great rugs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Their Skills, Their Selves<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

India\u2019s generations-long history of rug-weaving made it a natural choice. However, the local relationship to this once time-honored work had grown complicated. Most weavers could earn only a meager sum. \u201cPeople would remark, \u2018What will you achieve from this? Will this help you build your future? Weaving will lead you nowhere.\u2019 \u201d remembers Shivmohan Yadav. Fellow weaver Pramod Yadav could not afford to pay for his children\u2019s education or even groceries. But their situations were about to change. \u201cOnce we decided to do it ourselves, it was important to do it the right way,\u201d says Callie Mooney. The Perennials Global Product Director prefers the simpler title \u201cRug Lady.\u201d Mooney remembers touring the area with Ann Sutherland early on. \u201cWe were looking at potential housing,\u201d Mooney recalls. Sutherland questioned the quality of a door. When told it was standard, \u201cshe said, \u2018I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s standard. It should be something that we would want to live in as well.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

So, they built a campus where all could hold their heads high. \u201cIt\u2019d be hard not to be proud of what you\u2019re doing when you walk into that facility,\u201d Mooney says. Workers clock in via retinal scanners. And the near-immaculate white floor is a far cry from the dirt pits in which they\u2019d weave at home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Weave This Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Weavers arrive with a variety of skill levels. But even the\nmost experienced need training to adapt to the fiber texture, equipment, and\nother specifications. But most tend to stick to their specialties, such as\nTibetan knot or flat weaving.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Once trained, each will work on crafting approximately three\nsquare feet of textile at a time. The same artisan will return to that section\nuntil it is complete, like painters to canvases. There is no second shift that\npicks up where the last weaver left off.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

As each concentrates on his section, he must be aware of his\nfellow weavers. \u201cEveryone has to be in sync,\u201d explains Mooney. \u201cWhen they\u2019re\npulling that bar back and packing that yarn\u2014if the guy on the right has been\nworking out more or the guy on the left is sleepy that day\u2014the width won\u2019t be\nthe same.\u201d On simpler designs, weavers might accomplish eight to sixteen inches\nper day. But abstract patterns or subtle gradients may grow no more than three\ninches in that time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Finishing Touches<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

When rugs leave the loom, most are unrecognizable before the\nfinishers. These artisans trim to reveal the extraordinary patterns that lie\nbeneath. Both Mooney and Morris are quick to credit Amol Biniwale, managing\ndirector of Perennials India, for the quality of these creations and success of\ntheir makers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

The makers appreciate it, as well. \u201cAfter I joined\nPerennials, my life has changed for the better,\u201d says Pramod Yadav. \u201cPerennials\nis like my newfound family.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Perennials may even be helping reverse attitudes toward\nrug-making. \u201cComing to Perennials, I got the chance to practice my craft,\u201d says\nSarfaraz Alam, \u201cPerennials has nurtured me and helped bring out the true artist\nwithin me.\u201d It\u2019s one more of many beautiful side effects made possible by\nsimply setting out to make some rugs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Photo: Labyrinthine patterns like the Walkabout or the Maze Crazy Drop Stitch may be unrecognizable when removed from the loom until they are properly coiffured by a finisher. Like weavers, finishers have specialties in which they train, and their painstaking work can reveal complex patterns like this Whirlpools Tibetan Knot. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
